History

The idea to organize the belongings and the works of Bacurau came from the historian Daniel Klein in 2003, when he looked for sources to the biography he wrote on this important leader from Acre. He noticed the historic value of documents and records would go beyond the book itself. Moreover, most of the material he used as a source was somehow deteriorated, something needed to be done to preserve it.

With the approval of Bacurau’s wife, Tereza Prudêncio, and the support of Elias Mansour Foundation, a team from the Historic Asset of Acre has recovered and ordered in catalogues the documents Klein obtained. In order to store them, we created the Sala Memória Bacurau [Bacurau Memory Room] in the house where he lived in Rio Branco. From the initial idea to the opening of the memorial there have been two years of intense work. The design of the floor plan, the construction of the space, the identification and classification of the items, all of which was done with few resources and a lot of effort.

Opening

In 2005 Bacurau would be 66 years old and his Memory Room was opened. In the opening the singer Ney Matogrosso (volunteer at Morhan) was present, and the governor of Acre Jorge Viana, senator Tião Viana and several friends of Bacurau were also there, for they have followed his history closely.

The collection of the Memory Room is comprised on hand written materal, pictures, newspaper articles, books, furniture, clothes and award medals he received during his struggle for the elimination of Hansen’s disease and prejudice.

Open to public visitation, the space is located in Bacurau’s old house, owned by his wife Tereza Prudêncio, who still lives there.
